Founded in 1893, FC Basel is a Swiss Football club based out of Basel. One of the most successful clubs in Swiss football, FC Basel has won the Swiss Super League for 14 times putting them in 3rd place in terms of overall national championships behind Grasshopper Club and Servette FC.

The 60’s and 70’s were the most successful years for the club. They won the title 7 times between 1967 and 1980. They faded badly during the 80’s and it was only in 2002 that they got back to winning ways when they won the league after a gap of 22 years. They carried on their good form and won another 4 titles between 2004 and 2010.

They have appeared in Europe as well, losing the UEFA Intertoto Cup final to Aston Villa in 2001-02. They also reached the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup in 2006.

Grasshopper Club and FC Zurich are Basel’s fiercest rivals and the rivalries have spilled onto the pitch in violent manners over time.
