Established in 1919, Valencia was a force to be reckoned with during the 1940’s and remains one of the most successful Spanish football clubs. Along with Real Madrid and Barcelona, Villareal are the only Spanish club to have won more than 5 La Liga titles in the history of Spanish football.
In 1941, Valencia won its first La Liga title and went on to win the 1943-44 and 1946-47 campaign as well. The Copa Del Rey was also added to the trophy cabinet in this era, with 2 cup successes in 1941 and 1949. European success eluded Valencia in the 60’s and the 70’s but they finally achieved European glory with the European Cup Winner’s Cup and the UEFA Super cup in 1980.
The 1980’s ranks as the lowest periods in the club’s history as Valencia were relegated at the end of the 1985-86 season, after nearly 55 years in top-tier football. Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano was brought in to get the club back in the La Liga and Guus Hiddink steered the club to 4th place in the league and to the quarterfinals of the Copa Del Rey. However, domestic success still was far from reach and even Brazil’s 1994 World Cup winning coach Carlos Alberto Parriera couldn’t muster a trophy with the players at his disposal.
Things changed for them though and from1999 to 2004 season, Valencia once again reached the heights of the 1940’s. They won the 2001-02 La Liga campaign, after a gap of 31 years. Rafa Benitez was the man in charge and he led them to their 2nd La Liga title in 3 years in 2003-04. Unai Emery was handed the reins to the team in 2008 to try and get the team back to its glory days. But crippling debts forced them into selling their top players like David Villa and David Silva.
