Slovenia

Profile

History
Given that they only gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, Slovenia’s football history is shorter than the majority of their South Africa 2010 rivals, having only appeared once (2002). Their debut tournament did not go to plan, with star player Zlatko Zahovic sent home after coming to blows with coach Katanec following the first of three straight losses during a disappointing group phase.

Qualification
Slovenia’s qualification group provided one of the biggest shocks in Europe, with neither Poland nor the Czech Republic making it into the top two. Two victories over group winners Slovakia and a run of three straight wins in the last three games saw Slovenia bag second place. This lead to a play-off tie against a highly fancied Russian side and, despite going two goals down away from home, they pulled one back and won 1-0 at home to pull off the shock of the round on away goals. The star of the campaign was undoubtedly Milivoje Novakovic who played more minutes than any other player in the squad and topped the scoring charts with five goals.

Prospects
The serial overachievers of Europe, Slovenia left Poland, the Czech Republic and Russia in their wake during qualifying to reach yet another major tournament. There is barely a recognisable name amongst Matjaz Kek's squad, but that has not prevented his team from producing some incredible results, a feat based on a strong team ethic and good on-field organisation. A very consistent selection strategy means that the players know their roles, and in West Bromwich Albion's Robert Koren they have a talented playmaker and captain. Up front, Cologne's Milivoje Novakovic scored five goals in qualifying, while his club colleague Miso Brecko forms a key part of a defensive unit held together by Gent’s Marko Suler. Their first game is against the unfancied - but talented - Algeria, giving them an excellent chance to get points on the board before they face the USA in their second game. The USA and England will be the sides expected to make it through from this group but do not rule out dark horses Slovenia from springing a surprise.
