Founded in 1915, Sporting Braga is a Portuguese football club hailing from the city of Braga. Majority of its success was achieved in the 2000’s and slowly they have become one of the most successful clubs in Portugal apart from the Tres Grandes (The Big three).
Braga’s European progress can be traced back to the 2004-05 UEFA cup, which they participated in owing to a fifth place finish in the Primeira Liga. Consistent participating in the UEFA cup lead to a multi-million dollar deal with AXA following which the stadium was renamed to its current title. This was the first such case in Portugal.
Braga have the distinction of winning the Intertoto cup in 2008, which marked the last time the cup would be played. They finished as runners-up in the 2009-10 domestic campaign which led to their participation in the Champions League 2010-11 campaign. They finished 3rd in their group, so went into the Europa league where they lost in the final to favourites Porto.
