FC Twente was formed in 1965 after a merger of two professional clubs, Sportclub Enschede and the Enschedese Boys.
The club enjoyed early success after 1965, when coach Kees Rijvers guided them to third in 1969, fourth in 1970, fifth in 1971, third in 1972 and second in 1973 in the Eredivisie. The best players for FC Twente during this spell were Epi Drost, Eddy Achterberg, Kick van der Vall and Theo Pahlplatz.
The 1980’s were the dark years for Twente and they even got relegated in to the second divison in 1983. They managed to secure promotion soon, but earned a reputation as a boring side because of an infamous run of scoreless draws. They did better in Europe though, consistently qualifying for the European Cup.
FC Twente was finally declared bankrupt in 2002-03 which almost destroyed the club as an entity. The current chairman, Joop Munsterman bailed them out and they have been steadily building ever since. In 2008-09, the club was in the news after they hired former England Manager Steve Mclaren as their head coach. And success soon followed as they won their first Eredivisie title in 2010.
After a successful season, Steve McClaren resigned as the manager to coach VfL Wolfsburg. Under his replacement Michel Preud'homme, Twente continued their success and claimed the 2011 KNVB cup by beating Ajax 3-2, marking their third KNVB title in the club’s history
