Roma was founded by a merger of 3 Roman clubs in 1927 by Italo Foschi. The aim was to create a strong Roman presence in the top division. Only Lazio backed out from this merger and till date they remain city rivals. Both teams share the Stadio Olimpico and their derby matches are labelled “Derby della Capitale “ (Derby of the Capital). Barring 1 season (1951-52) Roma have been playing in the top-tier of Italian football ever since their inception.
Roma have had a mixed history and came close to winning their first Scudetto in 1935-36, missing out by 1 point eventually. They had to wait till the 1941-42 campaign to achieve their first national title. Mixed fortunes continued and ten years later they were relegated to Serie B.
Between 1963 and 2000, the club managed to get their hands on 7 Coppa Italia titles and 1 Scudetto. The new millienium started off brightly for Roma as a team of stars including Cafu,Aldair,Batistuta Montella etc and led by the mesmeriszing Francesco Totti grabbed the Scudetto on the last day of the season. Totti was the most influential player during that spell and went to break many club records. Following this triumph, Roma finished runners-up the next season. They went on to finish as runners-up for 2 more seasons as they came close but could not stop the dominance of AC Milan and Juventus.
In 2010, the Sensi Family which had been controlling the club since 1993 decided to relinquish their throne. In April 2011, Thomas R. DiBenedetto through his holding company, acquired majority ownership of AS Roma.
