Founded as late as 1992, FC Copenhagen is one of the youngest football clubs around. It is one of the most successful clubs in the Danish Superliga and is currently the 38th best club in the world according to UEFA’s team rankings. The club came into existence in 1992 following a merger between Kjøbenhavns Boldklub (KB) and Boldklubben 1903. FCK, which is its short name, became the first Danish club to make it to the knockout stages of the Champions League in the 2010-11 edition of the tournament. FCK’s main rival is Brondby IF.FCK has dominated the domestic stage with 9 League titles and 4 Danish cup wins.
FCK participated in the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 1992 and went on to win it, subsequently qualifying for the UEFA Cup. In their first professional season as FCK, they also managed to win the Superliga title. Further European success was hard to come by though, as the club couldn’t sustain its brilliant start.
Things changed in the 2000’s with the arrival of Danish international Jesper Gronkjaer and they made it to the group stages of the 2006-07 Champions League for the first time in the club’s history. They also secured qualification for the 2010-11 edition where they were put in a group consisting of Barcelona, Panathinaikos and Rubin Kazan. They finished 2nd in that group and made history by making it to the knockout stages.
All this has made FCK the most supported club in Denmark with more than 20000 members in the official fan club, the F.C. København Fan Club (FCKFC)
