Brazil 1950
The FIFA World Cup returned after 12 years. Brazil built the world’s biggest stadium, the Maracanã for the occasion. 13 teams participated in the tournament after Argentina and France decide not to go. India refused to go as well after FIFA did not permit them to play barefooted. England made their debut at the World Cup and were brimming with confidence until they were famously and most shockingly beaten by USA. Instead of last four teams playing in the semi-final, there was a league system and Brazil (who played in White kits) needed only a draw against Uruguay to win the Championship. Brazil’s star players Ademir and Zizinho combined for Friaca to score. But the Celeste equalised in the 66th minute through Schiaffino after a cross from Gigghia. Then minutes later, Brazil’s chief tormentor Gigghia struck the winner to silence the 200,000 strong Maracanã. Uruguay were champions again.
